Gambling addiction
Good poker players play on their skills and tend to avoid gambling. We all agree on this, poker is a skill game. However, we can't ignore the fact that individuals who suffer from a gambling addiction are as vulnerable at a poker table as at any bookmaker's. Above all, Poker is a money game, which makes it so exciting but so risky too. Not everyone has the skills to become professional but anyone can enjoy the fun of a good game of poker, as long as fun remains fun.
Gambling addiction can lead to personal and family drama. As responsible players, we can't accept to let such drama happen and as ethical players, we refuse to take money from players weakened by a gambling issue. PokerEthical will always commit itself in supporting initiatives which help addicted players. This section will permit us to communicate on gambling addict support associations and other support programs. Moreover, if you believe you can help our readers tackle their issue, please feel free to share your own experience with us on the forum.
Responsible gambling
- Never ever play money you can't afford to lose. Don't even play more than the amount you can afford to spend for your hobbies, never put your rent and bills budget at risk. Never borrow money you can't repay. At the amateur level, you should always consider your buy-in is losable.
- Manage your bankroll. Don't play outside your confidence zone: don't over-estimate yourself, avoid tables with stakes you can't afford and where you are very likely to meet opponents more experienced than you.
- Don't play when you're upset or in any emotional state in which you will be liable to make bad decisions or go on tilt.
- If you're not a professional player, then you should have a life outside poker. Don't ever put poker above your family, friends, career or whatever matters most to you. It helps to set limits to the time you want to commit to poker and respect these limits.
- Change your mind: Poker is a game, an entertainment amongst others. It's always good to have other hobbies. Any time you need to take your distance from the game, do it and you'll come back stronger to the table. In other words, when you're on a lasting bad run, go play golf!
Self-exclusion
Most casinos have a self-exclusion program where addicted gamblers can be added to a list to be banned from casinos.
Online poker rooms as well have self-exclusion programs. If you feel you need a temporary break from poker, don't hesitate to exclude yourself from poker rooms. Exclusion periods usually vary from a few hours to 6 months, which permit you to avoid risks in times of financial difficulties or psychological weakness. Whoever once lost one's total bankroll when coming back home from a huge drinking night also knows excluding oneself for a few hours before going to the pub can be a very smart move...
Associations / special programs
Here's a list of associations which can help you in case you have a gambling addiction. Please help us enrich it by sending us the contact details of any local association you know of. We are also interested in initiatives or programs regarding gambling addiction. Our forum is also always open for discussions about this issue.
Underage gambling
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 year old to open an account at PokerEthical, as in any online Poker room.
Anyone playing real money in an online Poker room can be requested ID documents and have their account suspended and funds seized in case they don’t comply with ID verification.
PokerEthical takes its responsibilities regarding Underage gambling very seriously. Poker is a serious game that should only be played by adults who can afford their hobby. We believe all actors of online poker industry (poker rooms, poker affiliates, and also parents at home) must do their best to prevent underage people from playing online poker.
